You don't need computers today!

Tonight I am going to update Zangle and get some new grades in to go on your progress report you'll get Friday.

Going to practice the sample questions out loud.
  1. Count off 1 to 5. Circle up desks in your groups and get out a piece of paper each. 
  2. One person should be answering at a time. Get two minutes and need to talk the whole time. 
  3. Another person in the group decides which question to ask and then takes notes on their answer. 
  4. Notetaker gives feedback for one minute and grades the person with a 1, 2, or 3. One minute for other group members to give feedback and rating too.  
  5. People to the left of those that just went now answer/take notes.

Panel questions - After the student finishes their delivery of the oral presentation – the panelists will ask questions. These may be clarification of something talked about, something from the portfolio or other questions typically asked in interviews for jobs. Below are some sample questions the student may be asked:

  • If you were to come back next year, what advice would you give to an in-coming 9th grader?
  • In which class were you required to "think" the most? Why?
  • What extracurricular activities are you planning on getting involved in after high school?
  • Do you feel prepared for what you plan to do next year?
  • What was one major problem did you encounter during your time at PLHS and how did you deal with it?
  • Reflecting back over your four years at PLHS, what would you have done differently?
  • If you had the power to change one thing at PLHS for next year, what would it be and why?
  • If you had two extra hours in your day, how would you spend your time?
  • Do you feel it is important to register to vote? Explain your answer?
  • Do you feel that good attendance and being on time is an important "skill?" Explain your answer.

Due Thursday is an outline of your speech - the more information you put in the easier prepping will be in the future! You will need to time yourself as you keep prepping...

4-27 Speeches

Progress Report grades are due next Tuesday, so I'll be putting some new grades in over the weekend.

Today we're going to look at the part of the rubric that talks about how the speech should be delivered. Monday we will talk about the content of the speech more in-depth and practice the senior panel questions out loud. By Thursday of next week, we're going to move onto the next unit!

Cover Letters due at the end of class today. Make sure it's formatted like a letter (follow the sample).

I am missing cover letters from Lupita, Joseph, Brenda, Sergio, Karina, Kyle, Abel, and Jennifer. Javier, Brittany, Gerardo, Julie, Rachel, and Connor need to title theirs "Cover Letter LastName."

Today, make sure I have your Proposal, Resume, Cover Letter and complete any question forms that you didn't before (under Resources).

4-23 Cover Letters

Log in to Zangle and take a look what you're missing from the last two weeks. The Resources tab can help you catch up.
  • Senior Project form you can't make up and resumes will be marked down a letter grade if they're late. Everything else can be made up full credit. (But not while we're doing other things - the forms are turned off for now.)
  • From now on, if you're in class and do not complete the assignment, it will stay a zero.


Proposal to Mrs. Brandl is due TOMORROW. Make sure you attach it in an email to her.


Cover Letters due at the end of tomorrow's class period.

Take the first 10 minutes of class to finish up your own cover letter - format it like a letter and look for spelling/grammar/punctuation.
  • Share with cynthiaeduncan@gmail.com and title Cover Letter LastName (ex: Cover Letter Duncan). I only have docs from Abby, Carolina, Josh Spry, Rene, Danae, Josh Lamb, Joanna, and Kelsey.


Then pair up!

Click blue 'Share' button and share it with your partner. Select 'Can comment.'

Click 'Insert,' then 'Comment' for things you want to write onto document. Write onto the piece of paper for overall comments. The paper is what I'm collecting and I will look over the comments made as well.

You are NOT giving verbal feedback yet, but commenting on the document and filling out the chart.  10 minutes to...
  • First, just read the letter.
  • Second, re-read and look for spelling, grammar, things that are unclear.
  • Third, use the handout to check for more specifics and fill out the chart.
 Swap papers and look over comments quietly for 2 minutes.

After 2 minutes, ask questions about comments and take the rest of class to edit your paper.
Tomorrow you will have part of class to double check your work and it is due at the end of class.

4-19 Cover Letters

Form Questions

Cover Letters (REAL world...)
  • Show employer:
    • Your writing skills.
    • How you are qualified for the position
  • Usually submitted with a resume; not giving new info, but highlighting some things on the resume that are relevant to the job you are applying for.
  • Check on employer's website for how they want your to submit a cover letter/resume. Most have an "Employment" section.
    • email (can be body of paragraph or attachment)
    • snail mail
    • through employer's website or job search site. (link)
  • Paragraph 1:
    • specific position you are applying for
    • how you learned about this position
      • if you have a contact, mention their name
    • why you want to work them.
  • Paragraph 2: 
    • Tell them why/how you are qualified and why you are a strong candidate
    • Give examples of your skills and experiences
  • Paragraph 3:
    • Ask for interview (optional).
    • Repeat interest in position.
    • Thank them for reviewing your resume.

    4-13 Finish Resumes!

    Don't get computers yet! 

    Today you  are filling out the checklist for a peer. Then you'll get yours back and make the edits they suggested and your own. I'm grading what you have done and submit to me at 2:15! Share your resume via GoogleDocs with cynthiaeduncan@gmail.com OR email it if you have it in a Word Doc.

    I'm going to collect the peer editing forms at the end of class, so have your name on it!

    In class next week, we will complete your cover letter and the proposal for Mrs. Brandl and practice the sample interview questions.


    We will also discuss your presentation content, visual requirement, and the other optional portfolio pieces. Over the weekend, I recommend you decide what your topic of you presentation will be.

    • Will get points for filling this out. "I don't know" will not get you points, so keep brainstorming and submit by the end of class.
    • My questions are to prepare you for the form due to Ms Brandl by April 24th. We'll complete that together next week.
    Keep working on Resumes! Tomorrow, first half of class you will peer edit using the checklist, second half you will finish your resume using your partner's edits. Need to complete your resume by the end of class tomorrow. I will grade them over the weekend.

    Resumes! Due Friday, tomorrow is peer editing both for content and for formatting. I will print copies of what you have shared with me tonight - the more you have done, the helpful tomorrow will be for you.

    Today we're going to focus on making our descriptions stronger.

    You start descriptions with verbs (no 'I' in the whole document!) and you want them to be strong verbs.

    4-9 Resumes

    "The presentation should consist of the student speaking about a passion they have or a meaningful life experience  and their goals for the future. They must have a Power Point or some other dynamic presentation piece (no poster boards)." 

    Required by school:

    • 10-15 minute presentation with a visual (PowerPoint, video, performance, art)

    For this class you will be required to complete (and graded on) the Resume and Cover Letter.


    Today we'll start the resume! 

    A resume is a one page summary of your skills, education, and experience. A resume is your advertisement to get you an interview.


    For work experience and community involvement, You should include at least two one-line descriptions of what your job duties and responsibilities were. 
    • Do not use “I” in descriptions of  work or activities. 
    • Each description of your responsibilities should begin with a verb.
    • For example, "Led small-group discussions." Not, "I led small-group discussions."
    • If it's a current job "Supports and mentors new staff members." 
    • If it's a previous job "Supported and mentored new staff members." 

    Descriptions of your experience and abilities can begin with things like:
    accomplish; achieve; analyze; adapt; balance; collaborate; coordinate; communicate; compile; conduct; contribute; complete; create; delegate direct; establish; expand; improve; implement; invent; increase; initiate; instruct; lead; organize; participate; perform; present; propose; reorganize; research; set up; supervise; support; train; travel; work
