4-19 Cover Letters

Form Questions

Cover Letters (REAL world...)
  • Show employer:
    • Your writing skills.
    • How you are qualified for the position
  • Usually submitted with a resume; not giving new info, but highlighting some things on the resume that are relevant to the job you are applying for.
  • Check on employer's website for how they want your to submit a cover letter/resume. Most have an "Employment" section.
    • email (can be body of paragraph or attachment)
    • snail mail
    • through employer's website or job search site. (link)
  • Paragraph 1:
    • specific position you are applying for
    • how you learned about this position
      • if you have a contact, mention their name
    • why you want to work them.
  • Paragraph 2: 
    • Tell them why/how you are qualified and why you are a strong candidate
    • Give examples of your skills and experiences
  • Paragraph 3:
    • Ask for interview (optional).
    • Repeat interest in position.
    • Thank them for reviewing your resume.
TODAY we are doing Senior Project cover letters. And we have handouts :)
